Most people are aware of my strong dislike of Rap4, of their poorly designed and manufactured products and shoddy business practices.
But im not the kind of person who disses something without having a first hand experience with it.
So this is a hater review,
i dont give a break for anything, and i spot every tiny problem.
i have no intention to advise to buy or not to, that is not my problem.
My goal is to make Rap4, to understand (i havent lost all hope in people... yet.) that they need to change!
That they need to stop playing the cost cutting and the lowest bidder game. That they need better designers, better quality control.
Oh and maybe even stop outsourcing to China.
Well rant is over. Time of for the review.
Part 1. First look. August 15: Scroll down for part 2
The box.
Nothing really special. The packaging is rather poor. The magwel came with a visible scratch.
The parts.
the shells, the magwells, the cover, the hook, latch bolt, nut, and pin. No hardware? odd imho.
Two gripes here, a major one and minor one:
1) Plastic magwell. - The second most abused part, and plastic? seriously? Personally id try to get my hands on older magwel and modify it to fit this.
2) the cyclone slot cover - it really could cover all the slots and shapes that are there for the cyclone assembly... kinda lazy not to cover them. But that a minor gripe.
The latch for the magwels:
Frankly i found it silly. Primarily because in the quest to achieve easy changing between cyclone and magfed, they have over complicated the dis assembly, and introduced another potential fault point.
And a fault point it is - the "nut" is too long, requires essentially over tightening to make it even possible to fit the magwell over it. The nut also appears to be mildly angled. as visible on the second image.
The clamshells.
I dont even know where to start... The severe misalignment (no pin fits)? the slight bend? the poor finish on the outside? Pitting and tooling marks?
Oh i know, why dont we start with the missing pin hole on the left clamshell? the pin hole that supposed to hold the front of the grip frame... pretty important right?
Internally they seems to be ok, although could use a bit of polish... the cover is not perfectly fitting, somewhat sticking in...
First look impressions:
Not good at all. Too many mistakes, mistakes that could have been avoided with better quality control and actually shipping the products to the testers first.
So as soon as i get the replacement parts , next will testing it on the field, with the craptastic back bottle adapter (that hopefully ill be able to replace with a better product... already improved the airline)
Question to users of both Rap4 20 rnd mags and MILSIG ones - to you find the rap4 mag spring much stiffer that the milsig one? I found it a bit too stiff, and putting too much pressure...
Questions are welcome.
A notice for Canadians:
Per Tactical-Mod.ca vice pres, they are now refunding defective Tacamo products, as they are out of stock for the kits, and cannot replace parts.
Part 2. Second look
So ive got the replacement parts and finally was able to put the marker together.
Dont see a reason for pictures, but if someone feels i ought to put some up, just say so.
The build is Tacamo MKP kit, Flexi valve with permanently blocked cyclone port, and TechT BK edition bolt.
The paint used for testing was Draxxus field with an average size of 0.687.
Put a few mags of paint through it, in semi/burst/full auto modes. No breaks or other issues.
It shoots, and being a phenom at the heart it shoots well.
There are still issues, the majority of them are minor and for the most part wont hamper the operation, but they point to sloppiness, that i hope Rap4 with rectify in their next batch.
- The clamshells were obviously diligently inspected prior to shipment per the now declared policy. Almost perfect finish (you gotta really look to find anything), but some oddities still present.
Not something that will hamper the operation, but for example there was a gap between the bottom of the clamshells and the magwell. The gap is big enough to see the paintballs.
The shells are a bit tight:
- it doesnt like the TPX springs i use to increase efficiency.
The springs unable to return the bolt. The inside appears to be too tight/ Had to put the stock phenom spring.
In case someone wants to know the difference - the valve was chronied to 280 with the TPX spring, dropped to an average of 240 with the stock spring.
- had to loosen the screws to remove/insert the valve.
The magwell is wobbly possibly due to the retaining pin being too long.
- the hinge ears, prevent the use of the stock handguard, requiring a modification of it.
I wasnt able to test the fit of the cyclone, as i lost my retaining screw, so this is something i will need review at a later stage.
Speaking of the magwell/cyclone change thingamabob, the whole concept left me a bit flabbergasted.
As you all know the magwell is held by a pin in the back, and a kind of a hinge in the front. The hinge is formed by open ears on the well, and a curiously shaped screw in the body.
Now when i first put the thing together i have assumed that the purpose of that curious hinge system is to make it easy to change from the magwell to the bottom plate/cyclone adapter, via removal of just the pin . That was not correct. To change to the cyclone adapter, you must fully remove the hinge screw and nut, and replace them with a regular ones. The pin is still used, but it is too long here even more.
So in the end that as i said before the hinge system makes little sense, and rather making it simpler, it complicates.
As i was testing it, a fair number of magfed aficionados expressed doubt in the durability of the plastic, especially where the hinge ears are.
I doubt that Rap4 will go that far as making those cast or machined, but i would hope they listen to our comments and simplify it
(imho - regular loops, and dual use regular screw/pin)
As i said in the beginning i have no intention of advising to buy it or not.
The fact is:
It is a working, comparably low cost, option for magfed play, and Rap4 is the only one who provides that option atm.
Whether its a good purchase or not, is up to the reader to decide. Read my review, read other reviews, and form your own opinion.
Kudos to Rap4 customer support and John, who got the Sisyphean job, of rectifying the company's seemingly endless blunders, and placating angry ballers.
